Open Library 開始提供 ebook 借還服務

Internet Archive 在上月底宣佈使用者將可以自 Open Library借回數位版本的圖書，2個星期後會自動歸還。有訂閱 Overdrive 的圖書館的讀者可以Digital Library Reserve 上瀏覽 Open Library 所提供的7萬多本暢銷書。看來除了公共領域的書籍外，Open Library 也開始圖書館借還書的業務了。看一段 Wall Street Journal 的報導影片吧!

有些比較沒有版權問題的書，但看起來還不會太舊的書也可以直接從 Open Library借出，你可以試試看 lending library 這個 subject。根據 Internet Archive 新聞稿內容，目前 OpenLibrary.org 借還書服務提供了:

• More than one million digital versions of older books are now available for free download in a variety of formats.
• Over 70,000 current digital books to those with a library card from many of the over 11,000 libraries that subscribe to the OverDrive service.
• Genealogical books from the Boston Public Library.
• How-to and technical book collection via the Internet Archive.
• Marine life reference materials from the Marine Biological Laboratory and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
• Spanish texts from Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala.

Wall Street Journal 的報導中提到 Open Library 這項服務也可能引起作家及出版者的關注，畢竟有 Google 的前車之鑑。撇開法律問題，如果未來有更多圖書館的加入，或者 Google 的服務也開始運作，那到實體圖書館借書的人次將會更加縮減。
