從 Learning Commons 到 Digital Commons

要您說圖書館最重要的東西是什麼呢? 大多數人應該都會認為是書籍，或者是K書用的閱讀座位，有人會說是館員嗎? 我想這些都對，但最重要的應該是空間，如何對有限的空間做有效的應用應該是很多圖書館最關切的事情之一。

對於 Information Commons^[1] 或 Learning Commons^[2] 大家應該都不陌生，通常都設置在圖書館裡的某一塊區域或某一層樓。不過我發現這樣空間的應用已經開始有些變化，位於美國首都的 DC Public Library 總館 (Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, MLK Library) 在上個月啟用了 Digital Commons 就是一例^[3]。

花費340萬美元整修 MLK Library 1樓西側將近310坪的空間，將原有的 science and technology collection 搬到樓上，原空間改為 Digital Commons。設置有下列的硬體：

• 16 iMac Computers
• 60 PCs
• 4 iMac Creative Stations with Adobe Creative Suite Software
• 3-D Printer
• Digital Bar to test-drive tablet computers
• Dream Lab collaborative space with smart boards and video conferencing capability
• Skype Station
• Espresso book machineEspresso book machine
• Seating with power outlets for 140 customers
• Video Phone
• Download station (Coming Soon!)

Digital Commons 有近1/3的空間做為 Dream Lab，做為討論室/教室及collaborative space，他們希望能吸引新創公司或社區團體多加利用。

我覺得比較特別的有幾個地方：

1. 把 Makerspaces、Espresso book machine、可以讓使用者透過機器操作的設備集中/整合到 Digital Commons
2. 利用圖書館1樓的空間，以往這類空間很少在圖書館1樓。但現在有越來越多圖書館將1樓的書移到樓上或地底下。
3. 強調數位化體驗，就好像到3C賣場一樣，可以讓使用者親自體驗各種行動裝置及平台 (當然重點是內容啦)。
4. 空間的設計讓即使有這麼多設備，仍不會感覺到壓迫感。

bookless library 這個概念最近又熱門起來，看到 MLK library 的 Digital Commons之後，讓人期待 9月啟用的全美第一座無書公共圖書館，德州的 BiblioTech Library。我在新時代圖書館大未來 那場演講中分享了一段 BBC 採討 paperless library的影片，該影片的前1分鐘便訪問了 DC Public Library 館長 Ginnie Cooper。有興趣的人可以聽聽 Ginnie Cooper 對於 the end of book 的說法，也可看看 MLK library 的一些設施。

最近 Steven Bell 在 ACRL的部落格上有一篇名為 “Today’s Computer Commons is Tomorrow’s Card Catalog" 的文章^[5]，文中談到以往的卡片目錄櫃被大批的電腦取代，而這是 Computer Commons 未來的寫照。他認為隨著行動裝置及BYOD (bring-your-own-everything) 越發普及，現在圖書館是不是該設置大量電腦是很值得討論的。
