ILS API recommendation

上週在中興大學舉行的全國公私立大學校院圖書館館長聯席會 以『圖書館自動化與資訊服務新境界』為主題，而6月6日(五) 傳技也將辦一場名為『國際圖書館自動化的歷史回顧與未來展望』的研討會。看來最近關於圖書館自動化的議題是相當的熱門…

看了傳技的議程，注意到有一個場次的題目是「整合性圖書館系統(ILS)整合了什麼?」，我覺得這是一個很有趣的問題，因為有些 ILS 的功能實在不符實際需求，薦購也好，與財務或預算結合也好，都有水土不符的現象。

其實不只是上述的一些問題，連讀者最常使用的 OPAC 都不是令人滿意。美國數位圖書館聯盟 (Digital Library Federation, DLF) 於去年 (2007) 夏天成立了一個小組 (ILS Discovery Interface Task Force, ILS-DI) 負責分析關於 ILS 整合及檢索/發掘系統 (discovery systems) 的一些問題，並提出具體的技術建議。

在 ILS-DI 去年(2007) 11月份一份標題為 “Opening the ILS for Discovery" 的簡報資料中可以大概看出他們要做些什麼：

就在前不久 (2008/4/24) 他們發佈了建議書草案，相信很快就會有最後確定的版本。這份標題為 “An API for achieving effective interoperation between traditional integrated library systems and external discovery applications" 的建議書內容包含：

• An overview of our methodology and approach.
• A summary of a survey of the needs and discovery applications implemented and desired by both academic and public libraries.
• A set of abstract functions that external discovery applications need to be able to invoke on ILS’s and/or their data to support discovery and delivery.
• Recommendations for concrete bindings (specific protocols, data standards, etc.) that can be used to implement these functions in or on top of existing and/or future ILS’s. Specifying fully complete bindings and producing a reference implementation is beyond the scope of this small, short-term group, but we hope to provide sufficient requirements and details that others can produce appropriate bindings and implementations.

也就是說 DLF 要定義一個 API，以 ILS為一個平台，讓不同 ILS 產品和建構在這些平台上的工具之間的互動可以更簡化、更有效率。目前已經至少有 10個 ILS 廠商或組織表示支持，預計會有更多的廠商加入：
