OCLC 終於宣示跨足 ILS 市場

最近有二則與 OCLC 有關的熱門新聞，一個是 OCLC 發表了新報告 － Online Catalogs: What Users and Librarians Want，從使用者和圖書館員的不同角度對什麽決定圖書館線上目錄的質量作了調查。另外一個熱門話題就是 OCLC 在 4月23日公告了它的大計畫 － strategy to move library management services to Web scale。

在 Online Catalogs: What Users and Librarians Want (pdf) 這份報告部分，它的重要發現有：

• The end user’s experience of the delivery of wanted items is as important, if not more important, than his or her discovery experience.
• End users rely on and expect enhanced content including summaries/abstracts and tables of contents.
• An advanced search option (supporting fielded searching) and facets help end users refine searches, navigate, browse and manage large result sets.
• Important differences exist between the catalog data quality priorities of end users and those who work in libraries.
• Librarians and library staff, like end users, approach catalogs and catalog data purposefully. End users generally want to find and obtain needed information; librarians and library staff generally have work responsibilities to carry out. The work roles of librarians and staff influence their data quality preferences.
• Librarians’ choice of data quality enhancements reflects their understanding of the importance of accurate, structured data in the catalog.

我覺得比較值得一提的是 OCLC 的新策略 － 朝向圖書館管理服務系統邁進。OCLC 於 1967年成立時最主要的目標之一是要建立一個線上的聯合目錄以節省圖書館在編目上的成本，成果就是 WorldCat 了。進入 Web 時代，OCLC 在 2006年推出了 WorldCat.org， 2007年推出 WorldCat Local。而日前宣佈的新策略就是要在此基礎上，將其服務延伸至其他圖書館管理的業務上，例如流通(circulation) 和採訪(acquisition)。

而 WorldCat Local 就是這個新策略的第一步了，因為它等於是目前各大 ILS 前端的 Discovery interface，而且還具備了 OPAC 2.0 的特色功能。在流通與採訪等管理功能推出前，OCLC 將免費提供 WorldCat Local 的功能(“quick start" 版本) 給有訂購 FirstSearch Worldcat的圖書館。WorldCat Local 可以：

• Display of a local library’s holdings first in search results, followed by the holdings of other WorldCat libraries
• Local branding of a WorldCat search box, URL and user interface
• Links to an existing OpenURL resolver for access from the over 58 million article citations in WorldCat.org to the online full text to which libraries subscribe
• Integration of existing OCLC delivery/interlibrary loan services (WorldCat Resource Sharing, ILLiad)
• Interoperability with a single local library catalog for real-time item availability information and place holds
• Access to the same social networking tools available on WorldCat.org

此外，WorldCat Local 也提供下列額外的功能：

1. Group-level searching
2. Interoperability with a second integrated library system (ILS)
3. Additional integration of your library’s print, electronic and digital materials, making it an even better way to help users find exactly what they want

不過目前 WorldCat Local 的 interoperability features 只支援部分的圖書館自動化系統，如 Ex Libris Aleph、Ex Libris Voyager、SirsiDynix Horizon、SirsiDynix Unicorn and Symphony、Innovative Interfaces Millennium and INNOPAC，所以如果你們館的不是這些系統的話，就只能使用 local branding、ranked search results 及 links to existing services。

至於 OCLC 所計畫的流通與採訪等功能，將會大量應用 Web 技術，或者說是都在 Web 平台進行處理，所以應該會運用到最近也很熱門的雲端運算。此外，這個新的管理系統也會支援第三方的商業處理系統，例如財務和人資等，目的是要全面降低圖書館營運的整體成本。OCLC 將會與歐洲及亞太地區超過 1,000 座圖書館和夥伴進行此項服務的合作。….

相信大多數的人看到 OCLC 如此大動作時並不會感到驚訝，因為一切都是有軌跡可循。不過這對 ILS 市場來說猶如投下一顆震撼彈，對市場生態的改變值得注意。同時 OCLC 在 WorldCat 及 WorldCat Local 上的優勢會不會讓許多圖書館改換其系統，現在來說或許還太早，但對 ILS 廠商以及那些專注於 Discovery interface 的廠商來說肯定是碰到一位強勁的對手了。
